Little is known about the early history of the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), including the timing and circumstances of its introduction into new cultural environments. To evaluate its spatio-temporal spread across Eurasia and north-west Africa, the authors radiocarbon dated 23 chicken bones from presumed early contexts. Three-quarters returned dates later than those suggested by stratigraphy, indicating the importance of direct dating. The results indicate that chickens did not arrive in Europe until the first millennium BC. Moreover, a consistent time-lag between the introduction of chickens and their consumption by humans suggests that these animals were initially regarded as exotica and only several centuries later recognised as a source of ‘food’.

Objective:
Evaluate the difference in antibiotic prescribing between various levels of resident training or attending types.
Design:Observational, retrospective study.
Setting:Tertiary-care, academic medical center in Madison, Wisconsin.
Methods:We measured antibiotic utilization from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2018, in our general medicine (GM) and hospitalist services. The GM1 service is staffed by outpatient internal medicine physicians, the GM2 service is staffed by geriatricians and hospitalists, and the GM3 service is staffed by only hospitalists. The GMA service is led by junior resident physicians, and the GMB service is led by senior resident physicians. We measured utilization using days of therapy (DOT) per 1,000 patient days (PD). In a secondary analysis based on antibiotic spectrum, we used average DOT per 1,000 PD.
Results:Teaching services prescribed more antibiotics than nonteaching services (671.6 vs 575.2 DOT per 1,000 PD; P < .0001). Junior resident–led services used more antibiotics than senior resident–led services (740.9 vs 510.0 DOT per 1,000 PD; P < .0001). Overall, antibiotic prescribing was numerically similar between various attending physician backgrounds. A secondary analysis showed that GM services prescribed more broad-spectrum, anti-MRSA, and anti-pseudomonal antibiotics than the hospitalist services. GM junior resident–led services prescribed more broad-spectrum, anti-MRSA, and antipseudomonal therapy compared to their senior counterparts.
Conclusions:Antibiotics were prescribed at a significantly higher rate in services associated with trainees than those without. Services led by a junior resident physician prescribed antibiotics at a significantly higher rate than services led by a senior resident. Interventions to reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure should be targeted toward resident physicians, especially junior trainees.

Al-doped ZnO (AZO) is a promising earth-abundant alternative to Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO) as an n-type transparent conductor for electronic and photovoltaic devices. We have deposited AZO films with resistivities as low as 1.1 × 10−3 Ω·cm by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using trimethylaluminum (TMA), diethylzinc (DEZ), and water at 200 °C. The work functions of the films were measured using a scanning Kelvin probe (sKP) to investigate the role of aluminum concentration. The work function of AZO films prepared by two different ALD recipes were compared: a “Al-terminated” recipe and a “ZnO-terminated” recipe. As aluminum doping increases, the Al-terminated recipe produces films with a consistently higher work function than the ZnO-terminated recipe. The resistivity of the Al-terminated recipe films shows a minimum at a 1:16 Al:Zn atomic ratio and using a ZnO-terminated recipe, minimum resistivity was seen at 1:19. The film thicknesses were characterized by ellipsometry, chemical composition by EDX, and resistivity by a four-point probe.

Because individuals develop dementia as a manifestation of neurodegenerative or neurovascular disorder, there is a need to develop reliable approaches to their identification. We are undertaking an observational study (Ontario Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative [ONDRI]) that includes genomics, neuroimaging, and assessments of cognition as well as language, speech, gait, retinal imaging, and eye tracking. Disorders studied include Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and vascular cognitive impairment. Data from ONDRI will be collected into the Brain-CODE database to facilitate correlative analysis. ONDRI will provide a repertoire of endophenotyped individuals that will be a unique, publicly available resource.

The largest survey to date of people living with HIV regarding attitudes toward criminalization of HIV non-disclosure, this study investigates: sources of legal information available to HIV-positive people; perceptions of how criminal prosecutions and media coverage affect understanding of rights and responsibilities of self and others; and where HIV-positive people themselves stand on the role the criminal justice system should play. While mainstream media constructions of criminal iconography do affect PHA views, those who have higher levels of formal education, are active in the dating scene, and have been living longer with HIV hold less punitive views than those who do not. While the overall pattern of agreement on where to draw the line in criminal prosecution holds regardless of demographic characteristics, there is some statistically significant variation in degree of punitiveness according to sexual orientation and gender as well.

National and international policies have encouraged the establishment of a representative network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in South Africa, with the aim of protecting marine biodiversity. The extent to which these marine and estuarine protected areas (EPAs) represent marine fish species and communities was assessed by comparing their species compositions with those of exploited areas, as sampled using four fishing techniques. Seven hundred fish species were sampled, representing one-third of South Africa's marine fishes. MPAs in coastal habitats scored c. 40% on the Bray-Curtis measure of similarity for species representativeness, but this score declined markedly for offshore ‘trawlable’ fishing grounds. The combined effects of sampling error, temporal variation and the effects of fishing on relative abundance suggest that 80% similarity would be the maximum achieveable. Forty-nine per cent of all fish species that were recorded were found in the 14 MPAs sampled. Redundancy in the MPA network was low, with fish species most commonly being represented in only one MPA or absent. There was greater redundancy in the 33 EPAs, with 40% of species being found in two or more EPAs, but many of these estuaries were adjacent to each other and embedded in large MPAs. Deep water fish communities (>80 m deep) and communities located on the west and south-east coasts of South Africa were most poorly represented by MPAs. Routine fishery surveys provide a robust and repeatable opportunity to assess species representativeness in MPAs, and the method used could form the basis of an operational definition of ‘representative’. In contrast to an assessment based on presence-absence data, this analysis of quantitative data presents a more pessimistic assessment of protection.

A new CVD process is described for depositing conformal layers containing tungsten, tungsten nitride or tungsten oxide. A film of tungsten metal is deposited by vaporizing liquid tungsten(0) pentacarbonyl 1-methylbutylisonitrile and passing the vapors over a surface heated to 400 to 500 °C. This process can be used to form gate electrodes compatible with ultrathin dielectric layers. Tungsten nitride films are deposited by combining ammonia gas with this tungsten-containing vapor and using substrates at temperatures of 250 to 400 °C. Tungsten nitride can act as a barrier to diffusion of copper in microelectronic circuits. Tungsten oxide films are deposited by adding oxygen gas to the tungsten-containing vapor and using substrates at temperatures of 200 to 300 °C. These tungsten oxide films can be used as part of electrochromic windows, mirrors or displays. Physical properties of several related liquid tungsten compounds are described. These low-viscosity liquids are stable to air and water. These new compounds have a number of advantages over tungsten-containing CVD precursors used previously.

New precursors were developed for the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of aluminum nitride (AIN) and gallium nitride (GaN) at low temperatures. Synthetic methods for the new materials will be reported, along with their analyses and spectral characterization. The precursors are volatile (180 mTorr at 45-55 °C), low-viscosity (10 centipoise) liquids, so they are more convenient as vapor sources than previously available solid sources. They are thermally stable to temperatures well above their vaporization temperatures, so their vaporization is highly reproducible and leaves no residue. Unlike previously available liquid precursors, they are not pyrophoric, so they are safer to handle. AMN films formed by reaction with ammonia at around 200 °C are amorphous, transparent insulators that are good barriers to diffusion of water, oxygen, and other materials.

The first room-temperature liquid compounds useful for the CVD of alkaline earth metalcontaining oxides were prepared by reacting metal (Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) beta-diketonates with novel polyamine ligands. The compounds are monomeric and can be completely flash-vaporized without leaving any non-volatile residue detectable at the parts-per-million level. A stable, solvent-free liquid mixture was formed by mixing new liquid barium, strontium and titanium compounds. CVD experiments using direct liquid injection of this liquid mixture deposited films of barium strontium titanate. This approach should also be applicable to the deposition of many other multicomponent oxides containing alkaline earth metals: ferroelectrics (strontium bismuth tantalate), metallic conductors (strontium vanadium oxide, lanthanum strontium cobalt oxide), phosphors (calcium tungstate), non-linear optical materials (beta-barium borate), magnetic oxides (barium ferrite), colossal magnetoresistive materials (lanthanum strontium manganese oxide), high Tc superconductors (yttrium barium copper oxide, bismuth calcium strontium copper oxide) and microwave dielectrics (barium magnesium tantalate).

Control of environmental mastitis remains a problem on many modern dairy farms. These infections are often transmitted between milkings, and milking hygiene will not prevent new infection. Consequently, the control of environmental mastitis has prompted dairy managers to develop new approaches that either limit bacterial contamination of teat ends between milkings or directly increase the cow's resistance to infection. Intervention strategies that may decrease the incidence of environmental mastitis include improved sanitation of housing areas, decreased water use in udder preparation, optimal dietary concentrations of vitamin E and selenium, and use of R-mutant vaccines (Smith et al. 1984, 1985; Weiss et al. 1990; Smith & Hogan, 1993; Tyler et al. 1993).
Dairy managers are encouraged to provide cows with clean, fresh, palatable feed immediately after milking. This practice is thought to provide cows with an incentive to remain standing for an extended interval, permit teat sphincters to close, and limit teat end contamination and new infections when cows lie down. In one recent study, cows that had access to feed remained standing for a significantly longer time than did cows that were denied access to feed (48 v. 21 min; Tyler et al. 1997). The purpose of the present study was to substantiate that feed availability could be used to extend postmilking standing time in a larger population of cows maintained under different management conditions.
